Online tributes poured in following the news that family doctor Lawrence Fenech became the latest COVID-19 patient to pass away.

“Rest in peace Dr Fenech”, one commenter wrote. “You were our doctor for more than 50 years, and you had the best bedside manner. You were a good man.”

“One of the best doctors ever and our family doctor for more than 40 years. Such a dedicated and hardworking person. RIP,” another said.

“Farewell to a man who loved his profession and his patients with a passion like no other,” one ex-patient wrote.

I remember coming to speak to you about a prescription only to find a then 71-year-old doctor studying in between patients, just to keep abreast with knowledge and be of better service.  I remember calling you from India when I needed help.”

Former patients, friends and family all took a moment to think of Dr Fenech’s legacy. Notably, head of tourism group MHRA Alex Aguis Muscat wrote a lengthy post in his honour.

“For many people who live in the southern part of Malta, Dr Fenech was a household name. For many years he served as a family doctor, and would start his patient visits from the very early morning till late at night, every day, throughout the whole year,” he lamented.

“One day he gave me medical advice which I will treasure forever – that in life one day or another we all fall down to our knees; but the most important thing is to stand up again and keep going with our journey, stronger than ever before.”

“This was the best medicine he ever prescribed to me and changed my view to life.”
