Good news was the order of the day yesterday when Health Minister Chris Fearne, joined by Public Health Superintendent Charmaine Gauci, announced to the nation that, for the first time since COVID-19 landed on our shores back on Saturday 7th March, Malta recorded zero new daily cases on Sunday 27th April. But what’s the situation looking like elsewhere?

As expected, the big number has only gotten bigger: there have now been 2,971,831 total cases of COVID-19 all over the world, meaning cases have tripled in less than a month.

April might’ve kicked off with the news that the world had hit the bleak milestone of one million COVID-19 cases, but it looks like the month is going to be ending with more than three million.

Leading the pack of infectious countries is still the United States, with a total number of cases that is now dangerously close to the seven digits.

986,000 cases later, the US is very much ahead of every other country. While some 109,000 people have indeed recovered in the States, the death toll is already sitting at 55,417, which is more than double the runner-up’s figures. Nearly five and a half million people have already been swabbed and tested for COVID-19 in the US alone.

Spain and Italy are next in line, but with the peak of the Coronavirus tsunami seemingly behind the worst-hit European countries, their total infection rates of 226,629 and 197,675 respectively don’t seem to be ballooning anymore. They still have seen their fare share of deaths, however, with Italy recording 26,644 fatalities to Spain’s 23,190.

Meanwhile, 868,480 people have now recovered from COVID-19 all over the world.

In comparison to the total number of cases, that’s very close to a third of every single person who has ever contracted the virus.

A number of countries have recorded over 100,000 recoveries, with Spain, Germany and the US leading this positive statistic.

Back in the virus’ origin of China, while the figures being given by health authorities continue to be questioned by much of the Western world, the official tallies now stand at 84,338 total infections, 77,474 recoveries and 4,642 deaths.

However, it is to be noted that different sites – all purporting to have been updated within the last couple of hours – vary in the above figures, sometimes marginally, sometimes by a few thousands.

As for our tiny Mediterranean island, Malta now has 162 active cases. Out of the total 448 cases, there have been 282 recoveries and four deaths.

What do you make of these numbers? Do you think Malta is mostly out of the worst?
