How It All Began: Marsaskala’s Heartwarming Coffee Shop Celebrates Second Anniversary With A Trip Down Memory Lane

Back in 2016, Sarah Cachia and her husband were facing a situation no parent would expect: their son Jacob was about to undergo another surgery on his brain after a diagnosis of chronic sinusitis turned their life upside down.

Not wanting to waste any time and risk losing their son to remain in their memory, they threw caution to the wind and made the personal and financial sacrifice to open a coffee shop – something that had been Jacob’s dream since he was a young boy.

Shortly before things took a turn for the worse, the son had spotted a property available to rent on the seafront of Marsaskala, and after insisting his mother took the number and after a lot of deliberation and two years of paying it forward for the community, they are now celebrating their second anniversary in operation.

The superhero parents were hesitant to begin with, after handing over the keys and taking Jacob to see the place they were sure they had just bitten off more than they could chew.

The property was listed as being “neglected”, but that must have been a very loose bend of the truth. The couple had to reinstall the plumbing and electricity, and with the costs all adding up faster than they could recoup they were truly at a loss.

Enter Erskine Vella and Chris Attard, of Best Deal Properties.

When these two business partners got wind of the story this family had to tell and the work they were doing to create Malta’s first social enterprising venture, they felt an instant need to help out.

“Leave it to us!” the two had told the family, as Sarah recalled in a blog post last Sunday.

At their lowest point in morale, the two saviours came at the perfect time. Perfect karma for a family about to open up a pay-it-forward system, supporting NGOs and helping other families facing trauma.

It took the Cachias nine months of hard grafting to turn their son’s dream into a reality, and with the help of some wonderful people in the community, Jacob’s Brew finally opened their doors on July 28th of 2017.

“It takes special people to see our vision as we see it and to believe in what we do.”

Best Deal Properties, O‘hea Opticians, Prohealth Malta and even students at MCAST all rallied together to raise funds for the project and look how far they have come!

Sarah signed off the blog saying, “Saying thank you to such people is not enough. We will be forever grateful. We can only repay such amazing people by promising to continue to pay it forward as best we can.”

Pay it forward and show the family some love in the comments below!
