Maltese politicians, journalists and citizens alike have reacted to the news that former Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Keith Schembri’s assets have been frozen. And it wasn’t only him, with other key people also coming under the court’s hammer.

Long-awaited by some, this late night development on Independence Day has led to some strong comments from people who have been calling for such a measure to be taken for years.

1. Matthew Caruana Galizia, the son of slain Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, said that this development was “despite our criminal government and not because of it”.

2. And journalist Jacob Borg reminded us just how long people have been waiting on this.

3. MEP Roberta Metsola said this was long overdue and called for “serious criminal prosecutions” to be undertaken next.

4. And some people took the moment to remind people how dangerous partisan thinking can be in the face of serious crimes.

5. Feeling vindicated, former PN leader Simon Busuttil also took to social media.

6. In the midst of all the reactions, there was still time for a bit of satire.
