Let’s Do It Malta – a new NGO following the merge of environmental groups Malta Clean Up and Get Trashed Malta, has begun a 12-month operation to clean up Qalet Marku – a peninsula near Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq.

Qalet Marku is a piece of land near the sea on the limits of Naxxar. Its natural features have faced damage over the years due to open fires, vehicles and considerable litter.

Minister of Environment Aaron Farrugia halted vehicle access to the land in March to allow Let’s Do It Malta to clear its plastic and metal debris.

The anti-litter activists held their first clean up last Saturday, together with volunteers from iGaming company Blexr.

The eventual aim is for the land to become a green area where people can walk and enjoy the Maltese countryside. It is also the site of St Mark’s Tower, a watchtower built in 1658.

“It’s amazing to finally kick off our project to restore Qalet Marku in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment,” environmental campaigner Cami Appelgren said.

“This is the first step towards safeguarding this area and its beauty for the coming generations.
