Labour MP Etienne Grech Resigns From Parliament

Labour Party MP Etienne Grech will be resigning from parliament, the party has announced.

In a statement, the party said that Grech was resigning due to personal reasons. Grech was elected in a casual election in June 2017 on the fourth district. Grech was first elected to parliament in 2013.

The four district is made up of a part of Fgura, Gudja, Paola, Santa Luċija, Ħal Tarxien.

It is unclear whether any of the candidates eligible to run would replace him. Miriam Dalli is allegedly set to accept a co-option into parliament for former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s seat. However, it is yet to be confirmed. Previous reports in Malta Today suggested Grech was being pressured to step down to make way for Grech.

Grech may not be the only PL MP resigning this week, with Times of Malta reporting that Justyne Caruana could also be stepping down.

There has been a mini-exodus from the PL parliamentary group since Prime Minister Robert Abela took over with Joseph Muscat and Chris Cardona both resigning, and Konrad Mizzi becoming an independent MP.
