A mortuary employee has been suspended pending an investigation for allegedly releasing the body of the wrong baby for burial.

In a brief statement issued this evening, the Health Ministry said it has initiated an independent inquiry after it was informed yesterday that the body of a premature baby was improperly released for burial from the mortuary at Mater Dei. The Ministry said it was informed of this incident through an “internal process” but didn’t say whether or not the baby’s corpse had been buried.

The employee involved has been suspending pending the result of the inquiry and the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.
