Educators And Administrators Are Plugging First-Aider Gaps Around Malta’s Schools, But Which Ones Have Qualified Personnel?

Educators and administrators are plugging the first-aider gaps around Malta’s schools, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo has revealed.

The issue surrounding first-aiders at school reared its head at the start of October after some parents were told how a lack of training prevented school officials from administering particularly medicines to their child, most notably with insulin and EpiPens.

MP Rosianne Cutajar even called for a medic or trained personnel to be placed in every school in Malta.

In a series of parliamentary questions from PN MP Claudette Buttigieg, Bartolo said that while some schools do not have an official first aider, a number of educators and administrators are trained in it.

While failing to divulge what the government planned to do to address the gap, he said that in cases of emergency schools must always be in continuous communication with medical services.

With regards to students who need to take vital medicine daily, he said that the Ministry can arrange for a pharmacist to visit registered students at their school and administer the medicine.

First-aiders themselves, Bartolo revealed, can administer inhalers, EpiPens, rectal suppository, and glucose monitoring; while their interventionist training is mostly limited to CPR.
