Birgu’s Pigeons Are Spared… For Now
Birgu’s pigeons have been spared after government intervention convinced the local council to cancel a culling planned for tomorrow and explore other methods of population control.
Animal rights campaigners had criticised plans to shoot pigeons en masse after the Birgu local council told residents to keep their children indoors during the culling.
Parliamentary secretary for animal rights Clint Camilleri and parliamentary secretary for local councils Silvio Parnis met the Birgu council today and decided to study alternative methods.
“We understood that the pigeon situation is inconveniencing residents and we therefore pledged to directly help the Birgu local council, as well as other local councils facing similar situations, with the aim of striking a just balance,” a joint statement said.
