WATCH: These Maltese Children’s Touching Poem Will Remind You Why Our Island Needs Some TLC
Development is definitely not a new phenomenon on this tiny island, but some would argue that things have been shifted into overdrive in recent years. In a newly-uploaded video, a group of Maltese children talk about just that.
This Is Our Home is a short one-minute video which has just been uploaded onto Vimeo by Maltese videographer Pierre Ellul. A veteran of the local TV and film industry, Ellul has worked alongside the likes of Ridley Scott, Alfonso Cuaron and Steven Spielberg, and was even nominated for a Directors Guild of America award back in 2006.
For this latest short, however, the Falkun Films founder takes viewers back to the most fundamental denominator of them all; our island, and its limited (and diminishing) environment.
The video sees a group of young Maltese children taking audiences through all the reasons they love this tiny island, including the trees’ clean air and shelter from the scorching sun, to the beautiful clear Mediterranean seas which surround us. As we all know, however, this environment is one which has been put in harm’s way far too often.
“To enjoy open space, now we need to go to some far off place,” the poem poignantly states. “Trees are killed, and in their stead, concrete is filled.” Gradually, the camera starts panning to the bigger picture of each scene, and the sad context is quickly revealed.
Sitting on a boat enjoying the blue seas, the children are soon flanked by the mainland’s towering structures. Even an innocent romp among greenery is quickly revealed to actually be metres away from traffic as the children can be see blowing bubbles in the middle of a roundabout.
“What’s left of this place we call home is not yours to destroy, but for all of us to care and enjoy,” the poem finishes. “This is our home.”
