Update: The Dog Days Are Far From Over For This Maltese Charity

Article Featured Image

The Association for Abandoned Animals (AAA), a dog sanctuary historically located in Marsa, has been helping rescue dogs find new homes for the past 15 years. They haven’t had it easy, with no toilet facilities for the volunteers on site, very little space, and an endless stream of dogs arriving on their doorstep in need of serious help.

A few months ago Lovin Malta shared the sad news that the AAA were being moved on from the land they are renting. We spoke to Rosalind Agius, an AAA committee member, who told us that the time has come, and the sanctuary officially moved out over the weekend to their new place in Birżebbuġa.

The problem? The premises is still unfinished and as a registered charity who depend entirely on donations, they have run out of cash.

It’s a desperate situation, but one that can be easily resolved if as many people as possible helped out with even small donations. The volunteers are distraught, with some even considering taking out personal loans to cover the costs, but with limited collateral that they are able to risk, even this is not an option. The future’s looking bleak.

Luckily, it’s the end of the month, so when your salary hits your account, please spare a thought for these local heroes and together we really could save the day!

No more peeing in the bushes!

Lovin Malta visited the new premises in Birżebbuġa and although there is still a lot to be done, the potential of the place is amazing, with a quarantine room, large run areas, super clean and comfortable living spaces for the animals, and the all-important toilet facilities for the volunteers.

Plog off!

If you’d like to donate and make Malta prettier at the same time, then there is an awesome fundraising event for the AAA taking place on September 30th in Mellieħa, organised by the LRC (Ladies’ Running Club).

“Plogging” involves going for a run and picking up rubbish at the same time. Bags, gloves and deposit areas will be provided, and there will be both a 10k and a 5k option. The entry is only €7 and all money goes towards helping the AAA finish their new home.

It was hard not to get emotional seeing how close this brilliant charity have come to completing their dream, only to potentially fall at the last hurdle.

It’s now down to us! Let’s show these admirable volunteers and unfortunate doggos that not all humans are bad. Our animal friends deserve to be happy just as much as we do!
