WATCH: ‘Maserati’ Claims Multihull Line Honours Following Emotional Two Day Rolex Middle Sea Race

Maserati Multi70, skippered by Giovanni Soldini, has claimed Multihull Line Honours at the 41st edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race.
The yacht crossed the finish line at Royal Malta Yacht Club in Ta’ Xbiex late last night, completing the circuit around Sicily in an elapsed time of two days, eight hours, 31 minutes and 31 seconds.
“That was a great race. There were many many moments. It was really a contact race. We were always together, we didn’t split. It wasn’t a tactical problem, it was more speed and maneuvers,” said Giovanni as he crossed the finish line.
Coming in just 15 minutes behind was Mana, owned by Riccardo Pavoncelli.
“It was really nice to have a great competitor. I think it was the best Rolex Middle Race I’ve ever done, for sure,” Giovanni ended.
The 41st edition of the Middle Sea Race kicked off last Saturday with a reduced fleet of 50 yachts streaming out of Valletta Grand Harbour and sailing anti-clockwise towards Capo Passero on the southeastern tip of Sicily for a total of 606 nautical miles ending back at the Grand Harbour.
The Strait of Messina proves to be one of the most challenging and technically-demand parts of the race with wind and current playing a huge factor in enabling a straightforward passage.
This year’s edition of the race was at risk of being cancelled in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic but the race kicked off as scheduled with a reduced fleet.
