Forty years after their landmark win at the International Fireworks Festival in Monaco, the St. Michael’s Fireworks Factory of Lija has released a documentary to commemorate the achievement.

St. Michael’s Fireworks complex is one of Malta’s leading pyrotechnic factories, its fireworks a highly anticipated feature of local feast celebrations.

The factory has carried out fireworks displays at a number of high level events, including the coronation of Queen Elizabeth and Freedom Day celebrations in 1979.

The 20-minute video uses a mix of historical footage as well as interviews with members of the factory to document its preparations ahead of the 1980 International Fireworks Festival in Monaco.

“We fired Monaco up! Whoever wasn’t a [fireworks] enthusiast had to come out and see, because we showed them a piece of work that they had never seen before,” one of the interviewees remarked.

The festival marked the first time a Maltese, volunteer-run fireworks factory participated in such an event, making the victory all the more notable.

The documentary is available to watch here.
