Banksy Can Shred His Art, But It’s One Maltese Creative Director’s Meme That’s Taken Home Gold
Remember when Banksy shredded one of his most popular artworks just as it had gone under the hammer for over a million dollars? Well, while the whole world watched clips from the hall again and again, one Maltese creative director was on his way to enter the Meme Hall of Fame.
Whipping up the ‘Shredded Fries’ meme, Richard Agius from creative agency TBWA\ANG took the clap-back meme from South America to Australia, even reaching McDonald’s very own Twitter page.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Raking in millions of views, the meme was one of the most widely shared in the last year, with publications like The Washington Post, Adweek and Creativepool all picking it up.

And guess what? TBWA\ANG has only gone and won several awards for this work! Proving art and brands are part of culture and not just advertising, Agius took gold at Balticbest Festival and the Creative Awards Summit and silver at the W3 Awards.
TBWA\ANG definitely needs to be on every design and marketing guru’s radar.
Taking ‘disruption’ to a literal level, TBWA\ANG uses the philosophy to fuel their creativity and strategy in overturning market conventions with big ideas that cater to their client’s brand vision.
With Agius at the creative helm for over 5 years, TBWA\ANG always looks to keep things fresh and remain one of Malta’s leading agencies.
“TBWA\ANG attracts top talent from Malta and a myriad of countries worldwide,” Agius said. “I have worked with countless designers, brand leaders and strategic planners throughout the years, and the trick is to learn something from everyone that crosses your path.”
One year on, the hype around Banksy’s self-shredding painting may well be long gone, but Richard’s meme will live forever.
